have you got battery voltage at the coils? are the points wires insulated between the small fibre washers?

Had the same problem on my 550 project, turned out that the ignitor was not getting a good earth because of the powder coating on the new bits!, but you dont have an ignitor  but check there is a good earth.

the main earth from the battery bolts to the top crank case just above the kick start & there is a short piece of earth wire coming from the negative battery terminal & plugs into the main wiring harness

Do you mean above or below the battery? It sound like a combined regulator/rectifier. What bike is it on? Ultimately you are going to need a meter to trace the problem or better still someone that knows zed electric s if you are uncertain. There maybe someone on here who is local to you who can help.

this is a mk11 engine which it later than yours but the earth wire attaches to the engine about 2 inches below the rear top engine mounting on the right hand side. small 6mm threaded hole in the crank case

yea connected the earth to the correct place, still no spark, there seems to be nothing to the coils, tried the old coils still no joy, connected a live straight to the live coil wires and still no spark, its got to be something simple, ive cleaned all the coloured plugs checked all connections.
