Is there a way of telling the difference (without measuring the insides) between the 28s and 29s?

29 smoothbores have this little square casting on the side

Easy difference is the top cover - the 29's have a "keyhole" shaped top :wink:
And on the 7th day... Zeds were created!

One of the signs of 29mm Smoothbores is if you look on the R/H side on the body just above the float bowl- you will see a small square recess in the body casting.

I thought the 29's have a hex nut on the float bowl to get to the main jet instead of a drain screw

I always thought that GS1000 S used 29 mm ? but it would not be the 1st or last time ive been wrong :oops:

Gs1000 used either 26mm or 28mm slides depending on model before going to CV's.
The 998cc homologation Katana used 32mm smoothbores (the 1100 used CV's)

i recently got some gs1000 parts and was told 1 set of carbs where off a katana 998cc does the inside of the carb body change into an oval shape rather than staying round all the way through??

Yes! They are oval at the venturi.
