What is the likely cause of "blueing" on the brake disc. This has only started to happen after 3-400 miles.
Pads are original Vesrah type not Kevlar.

Are we talking new discs here, or the originals ?

callipers sticking ? brake pad tight in calliper? pattern brake lever not allowing master cylinder piston to retract fully ? master cylinder over filled with fluid

Thanks for the answers, calliper tight i.e. not floating?more copper slip required?
Master cylinder filled to line only.
The equipment is all original but rebuilt on a 73 Z1 including NOS M/cylinder.
Can the blueing be removed with a very fine grit paper once the fault has been rectified?

Use red rubber grease on the sliders. Copperslip is is good for the back of pads to help stop squeal

Bill Newman off here recommends ASTONISH kitchen cleaner for smartening up discs.
It's sold for cleaning up stainless and copper pans and sinks in the kitchen.
I got some from LAKELAND in Shrewsbury - think they have stores near you Steve.
re. caliper floating I would use light silicon lube on the calliper shaft bolt and make sure the O rings are in correct position and not worn flat anywhere.
A heavier grease will tend to stick up the floating action after a while.

I'm pretty sure the O rings are in the correct grooves on the shafts as this problem has only just arisen after nearly 400 miles of running in.Can someone please post the correct position of these items.

Just had exactly the same problem with my RD Yam (sorry for swearing guys). Small return/bleed back hole in mastercylinder was blocked with gunk maintaining slight pressure on the piston. Cleared hole with a small pin and it's now working fine, but I too now have a blue disc and I'm not sure how the heat has affected the mechanical properties of the disc material??????
I assume your brake system will be of similar design?

Definitely sounds like a binding brake causing excessive heat.

After stripping the caliper down I found one of the caliper shaft O rings split and jamming the smooth sliding action of the unit. When the caliper was rebuilt I used a NOS rebuild kit which included new O rings but maybe the the kit was a little too OLD.
After buying 4 new O rings from Zpower at £6.50 each

I noticed that they were a fair bit thinner than the orignals but now its rebuilt and working as it should.
Thanks for all earlier suggestions.

Great news Steve,
I have some new O rings for Z650, 900 and early 1000 if anyone needs those.
£7.99 for the set of 4 - but I think the Z1 item is a different part code - although it could still be the same size from what I have seen.
Cheers from Mark
