Is it possible to run an electronic tacho from a newer bike on an older Z? If you are using Dyna coils and ignition, can the pulses be taken from the ignition to operate a newer type Tacho?

I'm pretty sure that would work Mark.In fact that's how the Scitsu tacho works and i'd think most electronic tachos operate from ignition coil pulses.

Mark - I've spent ???????s on electronic tachos, scitsu, gpz, zxr, gsxr, fzr, some work counting pulses some work by current - you need to find out about the ignition units used with them what pulses they generate are they lost sperk etc - don't bother with any of them.
Go and spend ?200 on a Stack unit, it's user programable ie you can re-configure it if you change your ignition for different pulses. Stepper motor design - doesn't waver about and you can trigger a shift light if you want. If you do decide to buy one you will probably get a better deal through your local stockist than Demon Tweeks, mine was just under 200 delivered.

Ive got an old style gixer rev counter on mine which just takes a pulse from the coils if thats any use. Not mega flashy by modern standards, but does the job.

Rich I am looking to fit a stack system to the project bike to cover all the requirements Speedo Tacho warning lights etc. Which one would you recommend I want it to be able to bolt onto a set of yokes including a back to the system. Hope this makes sense.

Cheers Ian.

Ian, no it doesn't! do you mean something like the H****a dash that stack made? Have a look at the Stack and SPA websites, I just bought the stack 200 and am using a pushbike speedo in a carbon/foam pod with leds for the warning lights, if you want a photo I'll mail one to you. SPAs new ones are less deep than Stacks, but all the info is available online.

If you could send photo's Rich I would appreciate it. Yes I did mean ones like the SP1 H***A that are self contained and bolt to the top yoke. I keep seeing loads of differant makes advertised but am unsure how they will work on a 25 year old wiring loomed bike. Be nice to fit one though just to keep the bike sparse. I am going for the if it aint required it aint being fitted look.

Cheers Ian.

i have only ever run zxr style rev counters, like the guys said you only need 3 wires a pulse from the "-" usually black wire from the 1-4 coil a switched live (brown) and an earth (black/yellow) for it to work, if you want to use suzuki rev counter just find out which is pulse ,live and earth

Thanks lads I thought I probably could, but thought I'd ask just to be sure. ZRX ones seem to be a good idea as I can use a matching speedo and run it from the front wheel.
