Seized up , Help!!!

#1 PostAuthor: Vendetta761 » Fri Jun 13, 2014 5:39 pm

Just skidded to a stop off the M4 in Wales on my newly build ST No.1, running her in with 200 miles just clocked.
Doing 60 then suddenly no gears , pulled to side of motorway (hairy ) and then rear wheel locked and a 20m skid.
Engine running fine , found neutral but when ever I put her in gear she pulls then stalls without moving , totally locked solid.
Any ideS ? Gearbox? Clutch ? Front bevel? uJ ? Final bevel box?
Am stuck at side of road waiting for AA with minimal tools! Any advice gratefully taken . vendetta . Friday 13th eh ?

V many years ago I locked up a gt750 after I'd put it back together
the problem = while the bike was in bits I'd lost oil out of the breather hole on top of the final drive, I'd not noticed until after a few mile, lock up
undo it, take it off and check that it's turning freely, as you probably already know you can turn them easily by hand.
hope that helps, cheers freddy

Thanks to Jimmock and Freddyz1r for the correct answer !
After skidding to a halt [F%&king luck considering I was doing motorway cruise speeds) at 2pm and calling the AA soon afterwards I spent the next 3 1/2 hours (!) waiting on the foot wide hard shoulder of the A449 in full leathers in almost zero shade on one of the hottest days of the year (27 degrees). The one time I did not travel with emergency water for which i have learnt my lesson ( trying to lick moisture from my armpits). The bike was just over the white line and I could not drag it further ( ever tried to push, drag a Z 1000 ST with a locked back wheel?) so it was all very hairy. Eventually got picked up by Mr local garage who then, after another 1/2 hour wrestling the bike onto his truck , took me all of 2 miles to the Coldra roundabout on the M4 and then spent another 1/2 hour dragging her off. Then waited till 7.30 for Mr AA proper to turn up, he was a fellow biker and we got sorted quick and well and then got home at 8.45.
Took off the final bevel and it had indeed seized, looks like there was a slow leak coming from the drain plug and it had only peanut butter inside.
My fault, I should have known, after getting the whole bike stripped and every part rebuilt EXCEPT the final drive i had just topped it up with new SAE 80 and thought that is that.
Lesson learnt, I should check it EVERY ride, never needed to except routine service intervals as the final drive like all things Kwak ST is bullet proof but does not run well on no lube, it has seized solid.

Luckily, in my Adams cave of ST bits I have 2 spares [ Thank Z1Par ) so swapped it over and all is now well and I thank the gods that I did not skid under a truck at 60 mph.

Anyone know of anyone to strip and rebuild the final drive or is it as I think, it is one welded lump and fit only for the scrappy?

Lucky escape for me and thanks to you both for your prompt and correct response.

not worth the time or money to rebuild as you can pick them up fairly cheap just chuck in the scrap

V you might find that re-filling with oil and forcing it back into action might work :?:
thats what I did with one of mine. I presumed rightly or wrongly that no oil= too much heat= expanded metal= seizure :??
Otherwise it's as z1b man says, they are cheap so not worth repairing.
cheers freddy
