I have a set of 1000a1 pipes which have perforated on the silencers. Original exhausts seem to be quite rare so I was toying with getting them restored (ie some plates welded in then rechromed) any advice from you guys, do we have any recommended restorers?, I am in Yorkshire.

Hi ,I have recently been through this process. After debating whether to go for replicas or repair I gave S and T Electroplate in Bristol a go, mine had no obvious perforation/rust but some small dents and a poor repair. Took them down to Stfford show end of last year and guy confirmed he would be able to refurb.Left them with him and got them back 10 weeks later repaired and re chromed . Have to say a first class job and would recomend

Scrap....

The amount of work required to get them looking decent would be very costly, and even that would depend on if you could find somewhere that would re-chrome them as most platers won't touch exhaust silencers as they can fook their dips up.

I know S and T will do a great job, but I dont think its cheap, having been through all this you have to offset the cost against the bikes worth to you in original trim;
you would be looking at at least £1500 if you could find a new set, so would you consider paying that firstly?
if not, would you pay probably half that to get a set restored? if not, get a V and H and live with the looks, IMHO

I watched set of pipes on Ebay a few weeks ago in worse condition go for over £350 quid so scrapping em doesnt feel the right thing to do.

I Also watched the same set, even asked the seller for a detailed and honest description as I'm looking for an excellent LH pipe for my thou (wasn't arsed about the holes etc in the RH one) but it wasn't good enough.

As Dave says, repairs could end up costing BIG money. What might look like just a 'few holes' might end up requiring half the silencer welding up as it was like Tin foil when the old chrome was stripped off...

There is a company who make replica SS silencers which I've heard good reports about, however these are 'only' the silencers and reguire your old (rotten) one to be cut off, which is a least an option if your headers and links are still good.

it would of course be helpful if G would enlighten us as to the cost of his refurbs.

Os pipes do an exact copy silencer for the thou in stainless though!

I've now got the pipes with a sheet metal man who says he can repair the holes by letting New plate sections into them. Quoted price including rechroming of the entire system including flanges is less than 400 quid. Will let you know how they turn out guys. Nick

is the sheet metal man in yorkshire as well mate.

Wow £400 thats well chaep and your lucky to find someone who is prepared to mess up their chroming plant carrying out this type of work. STC as DC said are brilliant if you want to keep your originals as i did. They did some patch repairs on mine and full rechrome for about £1100. I agree you can get new for cheaper but you cant buy originals date stamped!

I will keep the forum posted, the tin basher doesnt seem to think its an issue. Yes he's in Sheffield.
I have had a quote from OS pipes in the region of £850 quid for a replica full system which seems to be good value in 304.

be VERY interested in how they turn out for £400!!
