Cam and Chain

Just putting cams on and set everything up to TDC. I understand all the markings but should the cams sit flat when fitted before bolting cam caps or should they be rocking on the lobes?

They will rock on the lobes and the marks only line up with the head once bolted down .
Don't be too worried if the marks sit a mill or so above or below the head as deck height and gasket thicknesses will have an effect.

Wayne, If you haven't done this job before.... Stop!
I have seen many cam-cap bolts striped during the process you are about to do. So be cautious.
Firstly before you start make sure you have the camshafts with the shoulder end to the left. I have seen many bearings ruined by clamping the caps down with the shoulder not aligned correctly. Remember when you are tightening down the caps the cap is pushing down on the cam-shaft, which in some positions is pushing down on the valve spring. Hence, try and progress evenly.
I always mark the arrow on the exhaust camshaft sprocket and the appropriate mark on the inlet sprocket with some "White-out" (the old typist savour). There is too much for me to detail here..... Just to add, please proceed with caution! I know what happened with your valve seals. It's easy once you have done it a couple of times, however, first time is testing.

Ok did it all again and took great care. The exhaust side bolted down very nice but the inlet side started to bind up so I stopped. Going to try again.

have you removed the tachometer drive gear from the head? otherwise you might have damaged the worm drive on the cam?

During the timing /cam-chain installation, keep glancing at your advance mechanism to see it hasn't moved off the (TDC) mark.

Thanks for all your help and all sorted now. The mistake was all mine.
Ok TDC set up correct.
Timing mark on exhaust cam correct.
28 links from timing mark correct.
Didn't pay attention to the diagram to see you had a timing mark on the inlet cam so was keeping the chain tight between the sprockets.
Still luckily no harm done and thanks to you guys stopped and went out for the day.
All seems good now and cam cover all on and engine built!
Can I put the oil in now?
