Yup...knackered rectifier, readings all over the place with meter.
I checked the gene and regulator and the readings on those seem OK, im charging the battery now and will check the voltage across the battery when running

I had an interesting conversation with a very experienced mechanic the other day.
It seems that fitting the newer gel type batteries is not advisable for our older bikes. The explanation being that our generators simply don't output enough for this type of battery.
He has seen it many times before and said they usually fail after a short period, 3000 miles or so.

Mark, it's usually the regulator that breakdown on these older Kawasaki's. So, before wrapping up, check the voltage across battery at say 3000RPM.
TIC that's interesting. I just had a 12month old "Motobat" fail on me!
I thought the old Z1-Z1000's had alternators that could run a workshop?

Changed the rectifier and its wiring loom, fired it up and 17v across the battery.....bugger, new combined unit on the way.....

When you get it fitted Mark I for one would be very interested on the results you achieve if you don't mind

i suspect it'll be like the 4 i've done and be a more reasonable 14.3v.

It arrived today, its a PMC one and came with a whole page of instructions, as a fluent reader of Japenese I had no problems

...easy to connect with the correct type of plug and bolts where the old rectifier was, works fine, voltage across the battery back to normal...Happy Days
