Z1000 forks rebuild

Having the forks on the old Z1000 rebuilt with new stantions due to pitting, but hit a bit of a problem with a non-replaceable ally collet in the lower leg.

Apparently the later new models - so I'm guessing a A3/A4? - had a replaceable collet - can I upgrade to these newer model set of forks without much trouble? are they the same diameter/length , etc?

Cheers in advance.

Becker, I think I know your trouble.
The Z1, Z1A , Z1B and Z900-A4 allows access to this little castle valve via a circlip at the bottom of the fork leg. These fork tubes are readily available at a price cheaper than re-chroming. However, the Z1000-A1 & A2 have this valve burnished in. Hence, when replacing the fork tubes with the earlier model, you have to get the dampers or rather the valve and collars from an earlier Zed.

Let's know if this was the problem.
Note that the early Zeds up to Z1000-A2 are same length & dia.

Cheers Garn, certainly sounds like the problem - now all I need is someone with a set of fork fork legs/tubes I can use :D

Cheers again.

The main components you need are the are not the damper rods complete , rather just the ends of the early damper rods . meaning the two collars a small valve and its spring and a circlip. Also, a set of Z1 fork legs, which are readily available from the usual Z1 retailers.

Don't think you can do, as I thought ... Un-burnish a set of collars etc, from an old set of fork legs. You will find they went up a size of this small assembly.

Z1Bman, you are usually on the ball, however, this time you may be incorrect.
Those suggested forks are 39mm dia for the MkII.
I think we are talking about a z1000-A1 which I believe are 36mm dia same as Z1.

garn z1000a1 & z1000mk2 both use the same fork seal it is from this that i presume the fork tubes would obviously be the same diameter ??? i think you will find it is the z1000e1/ shaft which uses the bigger diameter fork ??

according to this chart z1000 a1/ through to z1000 a4 use the same diameter fork

z1000a1 -a4 36mm

z1000 e1/e2 shaft 40mm

I can see where the confusion occurred.
Your initial link ended in 12601056, whereas, your latest link ended 12743568.
Meaning you were initially pointing to a 79-80 fork leg for the MkII legs.
Good find, all the same.
