Hi Guys,
I've had a small attempt at removing my tank cap in preparation for paintwork.
But the rolled steel rod that goes through the cap and tank bracket is held fast probably with forty odd years of weather. It's the one the tank cap pivots on, I can't see where I can get much purchase to free it without damaging the two lugs its attached to. If I tried knocking it out these brackets could bend and possibly break.

Firstly, do you want to use that cap again?
While you are considering that..
You have something going for you, in that you are going to have the tank painted so you may be able to carefully punch the roll-pin out after soaking in Wd40 or some penetrating oil for 24 hrs or so.

You could make a piece of scrap steel up, that neatly fits in between the two lugs that are feeling the shock of the hammer on the correct size pin-punch.
Having the correct size pin punch is extremely important as the roll-pin must not be allowed to expand, as it will, if a pointy end of a punch enters the hole.

Now, if the cap is to be discarded, then you could carefully Dremel grid the die cast cap away at either side to allow a better contact on the pin. It not an easy job, so don't rush it.

try and press it out with the right size piece of metal and a g type clamp...also plus gas coke and cillet bang also might help the freeing of it

I went for the Dremel option,it didn't take too much effort. I've 'swapped' the bodywork for a painted set that Hutch had. With cash adjustment obviously.
He even fitted the new tank cap and catch onto the painted tank.what a job!
