Hi guys

i just got my Z1000 running again--project nearly complete!????????????
It runs ok without filters (S+Bs or K+Ns are planned to be fitted this week)

Any way my question:-when running without the standard filter system obviously the crank case breather needs venting, i have fitted one of the small K+N type filters--is it normal for a bit of carnk case vapour to get past the filter and hang around the carbs until it dissipates--0r --- have i got an obvious problem to sort, i was thinking maybe worn cylinders/rings etc

what do you think

Steve, You will tend to get some vapour mist
I have a small K&N on the crank vent, and the internal seperator plates are removed. I also have a breather attached to the oil filler
I wouldn't panic about it, if there no exhaust smoke, or other obvious smoke, its probably OK , as positive crank pressure is always a feature

Hello Steve, the straight forward answer you are looking for is yes, you should have oil mist from the breather. The crankcase pressure needs to vent, and this mist is oily. A mistake we often see is bikes built with braided hose from the breather into a catch tank.... and the catch tank is sealed onto the hose leaving no real breather at all! If you tune these engines then the crankcase pressure requires the breather capabilites to be increased too, easiest way is to remove the baffles / small rubber hoses, and the turret altogether and run a vent hose. With very highly tuned Z engines we run a vac-pump (an electric motor which sucks out the crankcase pressure) to enable higher rpm. I seemed to have waffled on a bit for a straight forward answer, Ooops Steve D

Hi Steve ,
If you use a low profile ape cover instead of the turret do you then have to use a vent hose from that and if so does that then have to have a filter on it and where would you vent it to?
Or can you just put the small K and N filter direct onto the Ape cover without any hose?

Mine currently has Kand Ns on the carbs and a small Kand N on the standard cover, but I quite fancy fitting the lower Ape cover?

Hello Steve R, You can fit a k&n on to the billet low profile breather cover or run a hose to a catch tank, the catch tank is neater as you dont get an oily mist on top of the crankcase which sometimes happens with the small filter. the billet breather has a take off fitted for dash 8 goodridge hose, Steve D
