Purchased a full set of piston rings from z power and I have a query as to which way up they go? my old rings have a chamfered inside edge on one side of the middle ring, which reading hear faces upwards and the top ring has a letter N which faces upwards too. My new rings are different to these, no chamfer to the bottom ring which is now black in colour with a marking of STD on one side and no markings on the top ring. Having inspected these in the bright sunlight of today i cannot see any tapering of the outside edges.

I am assuming the middle ring is fitted with the markings STD facing upwards and the top ring doesn't matter which way round this goes?

Pictures below if anyone could confirm this or correct me would be great.

Hi Dave markings always go upwards but dont assume rings are square and not chamfered butt two tings up against each other on a pane of glass you will tell if there is a chamfer then if there is thinnest part of ring goes upper most,if square doenst matter...Paul J

Thanks for that checked them next to some glass and the edges look flat. Got a reply from Dave at Zpower who confirmed the top ring can be fitted either way up

bent one of the oil rings trying to fit barrels today and wondered if i could use one of the old oil rings to replace?

any advice gratefully received!

yes it did got the middle 2 on ok, problem with no4 removed barrel ring bent.

Stickin me neck out here but if it was me I would risk putting the best of the bunch of SH ones on you have 8 to go at after measuring to find the one with the smallest end gap but make sure its at the top of the oil ring assembly................................... waits for the tirade of abuse

I Presume it's the 3 piece oil ring.
You should be ok to re-use one of the old rings.
Put the used one at the lower end (bottom) of the expander.
You want the new one above the oil holes in the piston ring groove to have the best chance of keeping excess oil out of the combustion chamber.
