Tap sizes

Hi again,
I'm going to buy a tap and dye set so that I can clean all the threads on the engine and frame on my Z1 after it's been cleaned and painted.
Can anyone help with a suggestion on the range of sizes I may need?

Paul, there are many threads they are mostly the usual 6M, 8M and 10M.
There are a few rare ones that have a fine pitch,.
the rare ones are..
Top shock absorber mounts on frame.. 10 or 12mm x 1.25 pitch.
Pillion peg mounts 12 mm x 1.25 pithch
Front hub disk mount 8mm x 1mm pitch.
Centre stand ... 14 mm same [as spark plugs].

I would recommend thread cleaners rather than taps.
These look a bit like taps but don't have cutting threads.

Beware the cheap'n'nasty sets - the taps tend to be very brittle and snapping one is a right PITA - DAMHIKIJKOK.

Avoid carbide and go for HSS.

I'd buy individual taps or single thread size sets.

You can get decent and low priced taps from China on EBay but it's a buying a pig in a poke. If you do this, make sure each purchase is below £15 - then you don't get hit by import duty and VAT.

On the other hand, I have a Draper set that I've had for years and it's not too bad but, like all sets, most of the taps and dies have never been used.

I bought some taps and dyes from china and I threw them in the bin, same with some stud extractors - in fact most things from china should have stayed in the ground and saved the worlds natural and energy resources 'cause the go straight back in the landfill.

Here a page that might be useful regarding bolts. These are Japanese bikes so are most likely to be JIS threads aren't they? I know the cross head screws are for JIS screwdrivers, not PH or posi. JIS Japanese Industrial Standard) is the same as metric pitch up to about 10mm then is like fine thread.

Oh I don't know... Chop Suey is rather good and I'm partial to a pancake roll

But I do agree that the quality of Chinese stuff can be variable;a bit like Japanese stuff from the late sixties and early seventies

However I've not been that unlucky and 95+% has been fine... and I'm pretty sure that a huge proportion of the 'British' or 'American' stuff is also made in China so all you're doing when buying direct is cutting out the middle man.

Decent tap/die set, Draper, Screwfix ect. top up with a quality Hss M10x1.25

Always buy HSS taps and dies.
It is best to buy dies of the split type and not solid as you will have no control on the depth of the cut and these can reduce the diameter of the bolt or stud creating a loose fit.

brilliant, totally agree with mal, i call them virtual products, they look like the real thing but are made of cheese, the world is full of this tat, from house hold stuff to garage to work, blumin everywhere.

I have a cheap and nasty set... but so for has done the job....but realise I need a 'proper set'.

I got so pissed off with my sooper dooper so called Blue Point vernier calipers which the snap on man sold me at an extortionate cost I decided to do a bit of research for decent tackle, you know Mitutoyo and such, I found a company on eBay called RDG in Myhthomroyd near Halifax, drove over and picked up 2 gorgeous Moore and Wright sets for a wee bit more that the Chinese bluepoint item. A proper engineers supply shop, really honest and helpful and best of all though I've no room for one, Myford dealers. Just for single taps not buying a full set, do get a decent thread gauge, this is what you need no point buying a full set, Presto HSS is a good make as is Dormer. Jes


You get what you pay for, supposedly I checked the new analogue and digital calipers against my old Mitutoyo micrometer neither were far out at all.
