What is the best alternator to fit to a Z1000 ?
Z900/Z1000
Or later type Z1000J

They're not all interchangeable. Which Z1000 is it?

I had to change the engine in my Harris last year and the engine that came out was a Z1000 A1 but with an Z1000j alternator cover fitted with the later rotor and stator
The engine I replaced that one with is a standard Z1000A1 with the original alternator
The only reason I am thinking of changing back to the Z1000J type is that the Harris fairing has been cut out to take the Z1000J type
Just need to find a rotor for a J

The 'J' rotor won't fit the A1 crank.
That first engine must have had a MK2 crank fitted as that has the same larger taper the same as the 'J' etc.

And if it had a Mk 2 crank it will have had Mk2 camshaft sprockets as well which is handy to know if you're swapping stuff about. An A2 also has a bigger taper than an A1 but I think it has the same camshaft sprockets as the A1.
