POSSIBLY its the Regulator / Rectifier overheating. Had a similar problem on a Firestorm a few years ago... Replaced the unit and problem was solved. Others here might have alternative solutions or know how to test the unit to be sure before splashing out for a new one.

good place to start - 13.6 to 14.2v about right - more can cause problems.
or vibration ?

Thanks for the replies. I wanted experts to tell me what I sort of guessed might be the problem. Thanks again as I,ll start there and see how it goes.

Also worth checking the wiring in the headlight cowl,
folks on here have experienced wires in there shorting out.

Main fuse terminals corroded, the usual culprit

Thanks Taffus, think I'll try that first as this is probably the cheaper option to start with.

Check the white wire from the fusebox to the ign switch. Often they rub on the headstock or headlamp bowl. Also the insulation may look ok but wire strands break within causing higher resistance.

Most common place for cause of fuse blowing on Kz900 is wires from front brake pressure switch to (Jay1969) Head light shell.
That fuse box area always shows signs of heat also!

Look at the fuse condition it will give you clues

if its disintegrated or vaporised the clue is a bad and direct short, discoloration or deformation in the element before fracture suggests a resistive leak that is weakening the fuse by overheating a good way of checking is to get your multi meter in series with fuse and see what current is passing through it ( the fuse ) its all good practise for 30 year old bikes

Garn, are you saying I'm a Head light shell?
