i have a tyre to change on an alloy rim, i was going to do it this morning, ive always used washing up liquid, now ive been told that i should use some special soapy stuff (i have seen online) but as im tight by nature i was wondering what people thought about washing up liquid. does it really react with the the rubber and alloy

KY jelly is as good as anything & it has other uses

Mick, washing up liquid is loaded with salt, so will cause corrosion. I was always told never to wash my bikes/cars with the stuff.

oh blimmey, looks like my crimbo tyre change isnt going to take place then, how about standard bar soap?
PS, how come sprinkling salt on washing up liquid bubbles destroys them im not doubting that there is as you say salt in the liquid, just thinking its odd that ive always used salt to quickly destroy the bubbles after washing up

Heard that about washing up liquid being very salty , but being terminally tight i use it anyway .

Actually when the bead of the tyre is against the rim the salt will be kept tight against the alloy but how likely is going to damage the rim? Who knows, why don't tyre fitter just use washing up liquid?

The tyre fitters soap aids removal with efficacy?
I'd buy the proper stuff, if one is adept at changing one's
tyres it's probably more cost effective for the time scale
between tyre changes.

yes,its seeming like im not going to be changing a tyre this morning, its funny how you can do something for years and then someone throws in some doubt and everything changes. i already knew about not using it in windscreen wipers because it rots the rubber, id just never thought about it with tyres. mind you i think this may be the first alloy rim ive changed a tyre on

aluminium rims corrode anyway so i would just stick to what your used to

Just in case anyone's tempted to follow Jimmock's advice.... the lube you use when fitting a tyre needs to dry out and become non-slippy.

KY (or vaseline) doesn't dry out so the tyre will be able to slip on the rim which you really don't want (Oooerrr I said vaseline and rim in the same sentence! ).

I use the 'proper' tyre fitting soap.
