Guys looking for some clues as to where to start here....... I have to admit that the Zed gearbox has always been in the main the most reliable bit of the bloody bike as far as my experience has been, so I haven't had to delve too deeply into its mysteries, and as a consequence not a 100% confident.

Anyway waffle over......I have an issue and a few clues where to start would be greatly appreciated.

Select First ok, go up the box 2nd 3rd 4th 5th without issue. come down the box ok 5th 4th 3rd until 3rd to 2nd to neutral to 1st , its a bit hit and miss.
It don't jump out of any gears under acceleration or deceleration just requires some fancy "river dance" style foot work at the bottom of the box .

There seems to be tension on the selector shaft in both directions and it don't flop about, but it seems to lack that positive engage and will just click through and spring back to its rest point, however a bit of repetitive foot work will eventually see it through and Neutral can be engaged without drama.

best and worst case scenarios please, and what to look for?

1. Selector mechanism, bit that the gear change lever attaches to is
knackered or spring worn/broke.
2. Selector drum pins worn out
3. Selector fork dog pins worn out or fork tips worn, doesn't allow the gear to
slide axially far enough to properly engage /disengage.

Detent lever worn.

Might not be the cause but when I was drag racing, I managed to bend one of the selector dogs.

Made it difficult to get into second...I think.

It was easily identified as you could see where the tips of the legs were rubbing on the cogs.

Most likely a bent selector fork but try swapping the selector mechanism first as the hooks that push and pull the drum round can wear and not rotate it quite enough to engage fully on the first prod.
The latter is probably not the cause but is easier and cheaper to eliminate.

all sorted now thanks to all that set me off on the right path, the reality was a lot simpler than imagination, took a bit of head scratching and I have no idea how it manifested itself, but I now have all gears up and down : no more grumpy git what else could go right today i wonder

You going to tell us what the cause was then ?

Loose gear lever ? Spring come off the selector mechanism ?

Nope simpler than that Rob,!........ at some point in the past some dopey T**t had punched a perfect dent in the selector pin cover plate just below the neutral actuator bump,this was pushing the selector fork away from the pin around second gear coming down, it was scuffed and shiny so somebody has persevered with it for a while. I know it wasnt me cos I never took the transmission plate off before hence the questions few taps with a panel pin hammer to flatten it out like it should be and all was well
