Guyz just has a look at the depth of the drilling that this pin needs to go in seems about 1.5mm deep as the pin is 8mm long will foul on the advance unit, seems someone before has the same prob and tried to hammer the pin in and hence it fell out.doesnt seem to be any old pin broken in there, just seems to be too shallow a hole to do the job, anyone come across this before?tempted to just drill out deeper....

the hole for the pin should be at least 4mm deep

As z1bman said the hole should be 4mm minimum , effective diameter and all .
My measurement was taken from face to the centre point of the drilled hole .

Paul, if I remember correctly the 750 turbo used to have a rolled pin but they kept shearing and I believe it was superceeded with a solid pin. not sure if the size was the same as yours but might be worth replacing with the solid type.

The RHS of my J was scraped off in a incident with the PO.
He replaced the timing cover / inner cover, advance unit and dowel (roll pin).
The roll pinl was left flat on the end (may have been too long a roll pin) and he hadn't noticed, or I when i bought it that it had made the advance unit spin eccentrically because the slot in the back of the advance unit is tapered to its outside edge.
I filed an angle on the end of the roll pin and all was well again!

Guyz, have sorted now, the sheared pin was aright sod to drill out managed to get it out with a left hand drill ,All fitted back together now and have managed to static time to the full advance marks,i reckon the pin shearing had let the advance unit move hence causing the unit to not go to correct advance position..Thanks for all advice on this and have a good hol all!!!
