Anyone running one of these self generating race ignitions ?
How fast do they need spinning to get a spark.
I've finally fitted the kickstarter to the café zed project and i'm not getting anything even with all the plugs out so I can get a good swing.
Surely it should spark off the kicker, think Electrex may have sold me a duffer.

I had a single exciter coil ignition on my Jota and it needed +50 RPM to get a meager spark,.. enough to start it.
Have you got access to a pit starter??

Haven't got any starter rollers, gonna get a mate to pull the wheel round with the plugs out tomorrow while I look for sparks.
These Electrex cdi ignitions are supposed to be high energy for easy starting All their kits for trials bikes etc use the same basic components and they are all mostly kickstart so I suspect something is faulty.
Need to have this thing start off the kicker, i'm too old to be bump starting it around the country ,especially after the ticker op.

There was a little hill at work out the back where i parked the bike.
If i was lucky it would start just before the river. If it was a good day it would stop just before the river.

I have one of their race alternators on my Z900. It's an alternator not total loss system so probably not comparable but it starts quite happily off the kick starter.

Was going to send you a pm about that generator as i cant find one for the zeds on the electrex site anymore.
I will probably have to abandon the race ignition as I think it needs 150 rpm + to spark and I can only get 110 rpm max on my other zeds revcounter with frantic kicking.
The only other option is fit a race genny if I can find one to keep the current look and fit a trusty Dyna 's'.

Good luck with Electrexworld customer service! Based on my experiences you'll get nowhere. you have to speak to "Peter" except Peter is always busy or not there and will never phone you back.
I'll ask James Clark of Team Glam if he's got a race generator he wants to sell. He's selling off his classic stuff and moving to Golden Era superbikes so might have a spare one. I'll see him Tuesday.

Yes ! I found out all about their customer service when I bought this ignition.
Took forever to arrive and then they sent the wrong rotor with it and it was a pantomime getting them to swap it.
Would be good if James does have a generator going spare but it does need to have a small taper rotor to fit the early cranks.

think diptune does a race genny that can use a starter motor as well

Don't need provision for a starter, just a genny will do as i'm using a kicker so will only need it to charge a small battery for the ign and horn.

Suppose i could fit the Dyna and run total loss as a last resort which would be fun,at least that will allow me to get it running for local testing.

I've never rode with lights in daylight anyway and have never had a problem in nigh on 40 years - touch wood.
I have fitted a brake light though to stop 'em running up my arse end .

Rob, I thought daylight m.o.t. would require a brake light anyway?
Seems dangerous if not!

No. For daylight running all that is required is a constant sounding horn and of course a speedo.
I opted for a brake light for the obvious safety reason and it makes the bike look more normal from the rear so as not to attract any following plod.

Can't you run a little 12v dry cell (Maplins) to aid starting? - Whack a diode in the system and it should be enuff to get the spark going from zero
