peformance engine build question...or two.

So, to go in the Spondon I need a bit of advice regarding the engine build.

All opinions welcome.

What parts should I use from which engines to make the strongest 'road' engine.

Pretty sure it'll be a 1260 and using a unitrak head but tempted to stay with STD unitrak cams. (I've got a set that need a regrind though...so could be tempted)

What cases are considered the best? And gearbox?

If I use the kick start cases what work do I need to do to make all the parts compatible?

A lot of questions but I know you guys have a wealth of knowledge to help me make it 'just right'.

Cheers

Gary

Gary,

Carbs? Injection? Turbo?

From what I remember...

Someone will no doubt have a different opinion as everyone has thier own preferences.

Best cases z1 / z900 / z1000 all pretty much the same strength wise I believe
Crank Mk2 (welded) (pinned not really required but if building from scratch do it for piece of mind)
Gearbox Z1000 A2 stronger 2nd gear (would still advise undercutting)
Clutch Z1000 A2
1260 hmm all of the cylinders are much the same for this so your choice but I would use z1 / z900 / z1000 as they look better imo and no work on cam chain guides required then either (piano wired not required but better imo).
Pistons MTC
Head GPZ1100 A2
Cams standard GPZ1100 A2 with slotted cam sprockets

If I remember correctly you will have to do a bit of machining on the head because of the squish band.

Thats all I can think of atm but will post again if I remember anything else.

The 1260 needs liners - which are reknown for giving hassle - slipping and/or cracking :?? Not always the case, but not unheard of :!:

A couple of cheap "internal" mods... The sump gate & 2nd gear over-shift mod are good.

MkII stuff is tougher - remember the extra teeth on the cams

I have a 1260 with webb cams and rs38's and a 1170 with uni-trac cams and rs36's and I think the 1170 is the better bike (both have uni-trac heads)

.

Why A2 in particular and not A1?

Good question. I thought the only differences were the stripes on the tank. :??

Hmm true I understand the cams are the same so doesn't really matter which.

I thought the GPZ1100 A2 head had more metal in the valve seats to help heat dispersion and to help trying to stop the dreaded valve to spark plug crack in the head.

I maybe wrong but that was I was told by a guy who used to drag race zeds.

Please feel free to correct me if anyone knows different after all it's good to learn new snippets of information and get rid of the old wives tales if that is the case here :)

So the consensus is the MKII cases in preference to the unitrak ones?

And do I need to use unitrak barrels if using the Uni head?

unitrack cases need extra mount fitting,id go with z1 type cases ,then its which type of camchain to use ,roller type is meant to be stronger, hyvo types meant to be queiter and less likely to slip on harsh down gear shifts
+ you don't have all the guides and camchain wheels, then its which crank?unitrack cranks agood choice + you get a uprated starter motor if you use the hyvo chain & the top ends an easy fit then, youd be better of speaking to ray debben for expert advice first

Gary,

If you use GPZ barrels you will have to have some welding done on the crank cases to take the front cam chain guide if I remember correctly.

Thats why I said use the old Zed ones.

I agree.

The welded crank and the stripes on the tank is by far the best option!!

Gary,

When installing a GPZ head on a KZ-1000 Kawasaki bottom end you must install a cam conversion tower.

If the crank has a 15 tooth sprocket use a 122 link cam chain and KZ 900/1000 cam sprockets (30 teeth).

If the crank has a 16 tooth sprocket use a 124 link cam chain and Kawasaki MK II cam sprockets (32 teeth).
