PLASTIC WELDING - Anyone know more?...

I've got an original 73 side panel with good original paint which has a smallish but 'clean' fracture in the plastic.
Anyone know anyone who can 'weld' up this type of plastic successfully?
Also, can it be repaired 'invisibly' on the inner face so as not to damage the painted surface? Be a shame to lose the original paint.
Cheers - Chris

use a soldering iron on the inside and push the plastic into the crack from sides like knitting try and find an old panel or something to cut a strip off to use as a filler rod. it must be off a bike to make sure you get the same type of plastic. i think it is ABS, but am not sure if you are carefull you will end up with a hair line crack on the front but no paint damage. the trick is to take your time.

If you can find it there's a product in some car auto shops called VersaChem plastic welding system, it's a two part epoxy based system and it's brilliant, I've rebuilt whole lugs and missing sections with it. Unfortunately it is no longer imported into this country from the states, so it may be hard to find, in fact if you do find any buy it all, it's about 4 quid a pack, as I'll have some off you. Failing that the Wurth system is virtually identical but a hell of a lot more expensive.

That's the stuff, it's absolutely fantastic kit. I've used it on loads of repairs and had no failures yet with it. I can't get it in the UK any more, as the importers can't bring it in due to kitemark packaging problems. If anyone can find a way of getting it into the UK I'd take as much as I can get hold of. It's easy to use and very similar to the Wurth system, but loads cheaper. it's very very strong and can be used for joining different types of plastic, which makes it ideal for one off body parts for streetfighters and suchlike. If anyone can get it let me know please.

Another good epoxy is Belzona which is very good and a lot less risk to paintwork than welding, the problem with welding is that if you apply enough heat to weld properly right through you will damage the paint, if you don't the weld will just be on the inside.

I've just ordered the Wurth plastic welding system, which I've used before and is brilliant, However it aint cheap, just the refills are a tenner or so, but when you weigh up the cost of a new panel, it more than pays for itself.
