retorquing cylinder head - torque settings?

Just had engine majorly serviced by local mechanic, new rings, cam chain, cam chain rollers, head gasket, etc...and now, 1000 miles later the head gasket is weeping again. So was rocker cover gasket so checked rocker cover bolts and head bolts and found that several were quite easy to move. Gonna take tank off and retorque them all but dont have workshop manual to tell me order and torque settings for head. Can anyone tell me please? :-)

Clymer manual states, head nuts - 30ft/lbs, end bolts ( by no 1&4 plugs) 8lb/ft, Cam cover bolts 11ft/lbs. If you tighten them to that now, I'd recheck them after you've run the bike 4/5 times or in 100 miles, whichever is first.

11ft lbs is a little bit excessive for 6mm bolts into 30 year old cast alloy, and using a torque wrench will give you very little feel, we see a lot of stripped threads in this are. If you have a torque metre then use inch pounds, about 65 inch lbs is sufficent, Regards, Steve

For a complete idiot are inch pounds foot pounds multiplied by 12?

Inch pounds are divided by 12 to get the Foot Pounds.

So 65 inch/pounds as recommended by Debben = 5.41 ft/lbs

You may find that 5.41 ft pounds is difficult to set on a wrench designed for a higher range of torque settings.

great thread, I've checked mine on Saturday and all 12 needed retorquing, I've done the head gasket replacement and overhaul 800miles ago, thanks guys
