Hi, a quick question about a `ticking` noise when manually turning over a recently re-built Z1000-A1 engine.
The engine is standard and I'm at the stage where the engine is in the frame, gearbox, barrels, head, camshafts and chain are all in place. The clutch is not yet fitted. The engine is in neutral. When turning the engine over in a clockwise direction (points side) I get a `ticking` noise coming from the gearbox behind the clutch (the rivets in the clutch appear ok)...the clutch is turning in an anti-clockwise direction as I'm doing this. When I turn the engine over in an anti-clockwise direction the noise disappears.
Thought I'd ask the question now before I get too far down the re-build road...and I'm getting a bit paranoid about having to split the engine casings !!!!
Cheers.

A bit of advice when rebuilding a Z1000 engine.
If it's too loud....too bad.

Hard to comment without actually seeing / hearing it.
Is it a loud ticking accompanied by some resistance or just a general mechanical noise generated by the gears meshing or the oil pump etc.
Maybe a dodgy or contaminated bearing.
You could double check that any gear dogs are not touching or too close to adjacent ones while in neutral which would indicate a bent selector fork but chances are it's nothing.

Hi mate, thanks for the reply,,,when turning the engine over I would say it is a loud ticking / clicking....it occurs roughly every 30 deg....as if it is a gear meshing issue or something similar...the oil pump isn't fitted yet. I'll check what you've suggested so far.

Check the kickstart mechanism, that's the only item that would produce a loud click, especially at specific rotational angles.
Have you got the return spring fitted yet ?

You've hit the nail on the head chaps...brilliant...many thanks. I've retained the kick start mechanism, but have hidden it behind a custom made `blank`...(I can't use the kick start as I'm running a V&H Sidewinder pipe) in my eagerness to see what this lovely polished `blank` would look like fitted I had forgotten to fit the spring !!!!!...I've just removed the `blank`, turned the engine over and I can see the kick start mechanism moving in time with the `clicks`.....thanks again chaps.
