Cam Cover Swap

#1 PostAuthor: nigel bessant » Sun Aug 25, 2013 11:37 am

Prior to attending Netley Marsh this year, I would like to ask if anyone knows whether the round top 1000 cam cover can be fitted to the later square top 1000 engine? Plus, can the generator and points covers be swapped as I particularly dislike the finned type that are fitted.

Anyone going to Netley this year?

Cheers
Nigel

Round cam cover will fit but make sure you get the later type with the bulges either side of the top idler otherwise you will need an earlier idler too.
Points cover is a straight swap but not the alternator cover as it holds a different style alt which fits the later crank with larger taper.

Thanks Rob for info. Don't suppose you could send me a pic of what I'd be looking for please.
I will get the alt cover machined but if it's anything like the swing arm mod I just as well give up!

Thanks
Nigel

For the alt cover you could carefully machine off the fins to leave a recess without cutting in to the main body and then create a matching disc to fit in the recess from an early cover ( preferably a damaged one ) which has the DOHC logo on which can then be pressed /glued / welded in etc.

As for the camcover, just look at your square one and you will see a small squared off bulge either side of the larger raised bulge that clears the top camchain idler.

The early covers do not have the small bulges as the top idler is different.

Chances are you won't find an early cover anyway as they are getting rarer.

Cheers Rob, there is a damaged alt cover on eBay, but I'll give Netley a once over first.
