Has anybody tried this? and do you have to heat up headstock or can it be done cold without distorting things?

why do you need to stamp the numbers on again

A frame thats been refurbed (ie: powder coated) can be difficult to see frame number, which ain't much good for the MOT
Prefered way is to remove offending paint, coating, etc

they can use either the frame or engine number, but it is easier for them and you just to take a copy of the V5c in with you.
No need to stamp, my T120R left Meridan with no frame number

My frame number can not be read at all cos of powder coating but its never a problemn with mot they take number off log book or previous mot.

That is exactly what happened to me this year. My Z's frame was powder coated and could not see the frame No. But before buying, I insisted the owner either strip the powder coating off to reveal the number or have the DVLA inspect the bike. Better to be safe than sorry.

Getting advice from the DVLA on this is like extraxcting teeth. To be honest getting a consistent/ official line from them regarding the ID of classic vehicles, I don't think they have a clue what to do.

I once looked at a Bonneville last year and was told by the DVLA the worst case scenario would be the bike would be immediately confiscated by the police pending further investigiitons. So I left it.

I also know someone who works for the DVLA who picks up vehicles on a truck ready for crushing, because the ID of the vehicle cannot be determined. He has told me some beautiful MGs have been sent to their death because of no frame No.

Yes it can be done cold and it is pretty easy.

Mine has been covered by the powder coating but as said by others it wasn't an issue for the mot as it can be taken from the v5. I would say that it would look a lot more suspicious if you tried to re-stamp it.
And yes it is easy when cold, being a Scouser there are somethings that you just know

Personally I would leave it. It is not 'ringing' if you put the correct frame number on it again. However the chances of getting the correct letter font or getting it all perfectly in a row will be almost nil, then that would look very dodgy.
If you know it is there and it is on the log book, then it will be OK. If there is ever any problems with the DVLA, you 'could' offer to rub the powder coating off to expose the number.

I was at a bloke's house the other night who has piles of Yamaha stuff - among his spares are two brand new NOS RD frames from Yamaha which came with no number so they could be used to replace bent ones. He also has some NOS unstamped engine cases.

My RD350LC has an unstamped engine case that had obviously been replaced due to the common malady of the chain jumping off the sprocket that these were prone to.It has the cast in hatching/ribbing but no letters /numbers. Regarding the frame number I'm sure I've seen on this or another bike site that before a certain date of manufacture it was not a requirement for the M.O.T. for a frame number to be present.

from another forum just right click it and copy it then upload it to photobucket etc. and get url to use for your self , so really i pinched it from someone else
