Z1000R - anyone local to Faringdon, Oxon can help set up?

#1 PostAuthor: martinz1000r » Fri Aug 02, 2013 11:06 am

Been a few years in the making but Z1000R finally fired in to life this morning. Good news is the oil leak that caused me to rip the motor down for has been fixed but it definitely needs some tlc beyond me and my tool kit.

Started reasonably ok but spits and pops really badly. I suspect a combination of timing and carb balance to blame.

Motor is GPz1100 Unitrak running APE cams (clearances perfect) via RS36 carbs and Kerker with big bore baffle. Original Kawasaki ignition (Z1000R). Carbs freshly ultra-sonically cleaned. Everything tight and no visible leaks.

I dont own vacuum gauges or a timing light so if any kind sole is willing to help out would gladly exchange biscuits, beer or even cash.

I am in Faringdon, Oxfordshire which is mid way between Swindon and Oxford.

I'm not an impossible distance away and have the tools you need but……

……I'm not sure what time I could give in the next few weeks.

Happy to lend the bits though.

I've got a timing light, gauges, Colourtune etc which you're more than welcome to make use of. Happy to lend a hand, but don't rely on me for technical ability!

PM me if you want me to take a ride over.
You want how much?

Thanks for the kind offers. What I am going to do is swap the carbs over from the GPz and see how it runs then. If the problem goes then we know its the carbs and would welcome help / loans.

Given last time it even ran was 2007 there is no desperate rush as winter is almost here :D

A mate of mine takes on work for people and know his stuff around these aircooled kwackers and suzy's.
But he is based Tamworth way. If you could get the bike to him he would be able to sort it for you for modest rates. Give us a shout if you want his number.

You say you have rebuilt after a oil leak, just a thought is the Cam timing right and not a tooth out, as it will run but badly!!

Ahead of you on that one! Checked cam timing and valve clearances. All OK. Cams have slotted sprockets and whilst not dialled in exactly I set both to mid point thinking that cant be far off.

Update....

found one of the rubber hoses between the float bowls had a split in it. Replaced this and also took carb rubbers off, cleaned surfaces and refitted with smear of sealant. Huge improvement immediately so thought a trip up the road might be in order

Open the throttle and it clears beautifully and god does it fly! It is frighteningly fast and what a noise on that Kerker race baffle!

Few immediate teething problems:

Clutch dragging so a little fettling needed
Oil dripping from alternator cover once hot
Spits and farts something rotten at low revs
No speedo (but then there's no cable lol)
So loud i got a glare from the neighbour

Feeling much happier now

:D :D
