I just bought an ELR and took it out for a spin yesterday but it's not pulling well, loosing speed on hills and backfires when I close down the throttle.
I think the carbs need a good clean, it's been laid up for a couple of years, Has anyone had similar problems and any ideas of things I should check for?
Also would be good to know the main jet size so I can check when I get them apart - Does anyone have a copy of the mikuni BS34 CV manual?
cheers
Glyn

Hi Glyn this Guy is good his website is full of good tips, sounds like you are sucking air/unburnt fuel to me check your carb to head rubbers and most important on these carbs is the condition of the diaphragms and the air box rubbers and seals, they wont work right without perfect seals.Paul J

carbs are stripped down and jets were minging. #2 carb pilot jet was completely blocked and that's the cylinder which was backfiring. All diaphragms in good condition.
Just a note to anyone dismantling the R2 carbs - the choke actuator bar is held in place by 4 cir-clips next to the choke return spring on each carb (not with screws like the set in the tutorial above). Push the spring back and you will find them.
The R2 does not have plugs covering the pilot jets (as in the tutorial and on the R1) neither did mine have caps over the air screw. I (like a few in several forums I came across) thought that someone had removed them until I found the diagram of the R2 carbs below.
here is the only place I found in the UK to buy new pilot jets (£4.20):
Mikuni N151.067 Pilot Jet #37.5

here is a diagram of parts for the R2 BS34
