Got the Z1b MOT'd at last without any problems, arrived back at home all very pleased with myself and my now road legal zed when I noticed a pool of oil on the floor, the contents of ther engine was running down the side stand and onto the floor, before I strip the engine is there any ideas where it could have come from or could it be just the gasket?

oil pressure switch tower connections,neutral switch, gearbox seals, breather tower,infact any of the cover gaskets that will seep oil to the back of the engine. Was your left foot / left side of bike covered in oil or did it happen when stationary? If it didn't go "crunch" it sounds like you haven't done something up tight.

I just parked up put the bike on its sidestand and it ran down the sidestand, luckily it waited till I got home rather than en route so my boot was clean

Alternator casing, lead rubbers are a prime suspect..... plus a dozen other things!!!!

I had a somewhat similar experience on my Z1000J with some oil leakage into the sprocket area from the gearbox. This then dribbled down the sidestand to leave small patches of oil every time the sidestand was used. To cure this I replaced both the clutch push rod and drive sprockets seals and the sprocket itself which seemed to run in the the seal, but to no avail. Frankly I have learned to live with it being an ex brit bike owner.
A friend suggested cleaning the suspect areas off perfectly and then coating the suspect area with a powder such as talc, the idea being that the source of the leak would show up being with the talc sticking to it. I have not tried that yet.

Thanks for that, my oil leak was somewhat more serious as the full contents of the engine ran down the sidestand within 5 minutes of stopping the bike!!
I can see how the talc thing would work on a less serious leak but the bike would smell like a tarts habdbag on a night out....each to their own, live and let live and all that......

I'd go along with Pigford's diagnoses of the altenator leads rubber seal. It's a rubber wedge shaped plug which caries the three alt wires to the blue plug. It often leaks. When on the side stand it could easily empty the oil which is retained there because of the angle. However it would not empty the sump! RegardZ
