I've got a set of 29mm Keihin CR Special Carbs for my 78 Z1R. i have a few questions if anyone else out there has experience of fitting them...

1) How do you space them to fit the inlets?
2) I understand from other forum posts that the standard carb-head inlet rubbers can be used, is that right?
3) Do you use the standard push-pull cables or fit a new throttle assembly?
4) Open bellmouths or filter? I'm inclined to opt for polished bellmouths and mesh filters to keep small creatures from being ingested into the engine and for looks.
5) What exhaust to use..? I'm tempted by the Marving race 4-1 and wondered if anyone else had any experiences of these or alternative options to consider?

1. sorry can't help
2. I have CR31s on my bike and I bought special inlet rubbers. The alloy tube that screws into the engine side of the carb has a raised ring which should fit inside a matching recess in the inlet. Don't know if you can use std inlets but the special ones aren't very expensive and fit perfectly.
3. I used a Venhill 888 quick action throttle with push/pull cables.
4. I bought some alloy bellmouths and fitted discreet filters in the end of the bell mouths. Have a look at my build thread and you will see some close-ups.
5. exhaust depends on your taste and budget. I bought a lovely handmade stainless PMC monaka from Japan which is not too expensive especially as the Yen has been weakening. It's about £700 at the moment.

Pretty sure 29 smoothbores will still fit Std inlets.

I've had to use ZX6R inlets for my 39m Mikumis.

Thanks for the advice fellas... that will save loads of experimentation, farting about and unnecessary cost.

CRs come in sets designed for different applications. Mine were 31s specifically to it a Z1000 and went straight onto the standard inlet rubbers, and used the standard cables. So if they're specifically Z ones they should fit straight on.

Jeff at Z1 Enterprises will advise/supply inlet rubbers.

I've also had a peek at the PMC exhausts.....

84000 Yen = £554

I am using the 35mm CR Special + a bigger set of intake rubbers + Trumpets from APE without filters +4-1 J&R (1979) exhaust + Push - Pull throttle cables from Z1 Enterprise.The 29mmCRS should fit the std rubber intakes.I have no problems so far with the set up except the need for the mesh filters for the trumpets.

If only it did cost £554, I'd save up and go for it but you need to add VAT, Import Duty and Admin fees so it works out close to £700....nice bit of kit but

If only someone in the UK could make an exhaust with the same thought to design and style in the UK. I've had a look at Exhaustcraft stuff but, to me, it just doesn't have that wow factor. I'm torn with going for a Marving exhaust as they are good value or biting the bullet and going back to Japanese suppliers... Im sure Exhaust Craft could make a pipe to suit your requirements. Made one offs for several members on here - worth a call id say.

I's deffo be interested in a Kerker replica.

I'm ahead of you there... been speaking to Exhaust Craft today on the very same subject. He would be making it as a one off so costs are there abouts with some of the mass-produced Japanese kit Ive mentioned before.

As an aside, motogpwerks.com who are based in Anaheim, CA are in the process of making a re-run of their Z1R race exhaust that was offered a little while ago. They should be ready in a couple of weeks time via ebay.
