In my Kawasaki manual there are a lot references to "non-permanent locking agent" what is the recommended one to use, I have found plenty of listings for Loctite 243 & 248 but on the Loctite website there are dozens of types for thread locking, what do you guys use?

Sorry I can't help with "numbers", I am interested in this topic. After my experience, I try and abstain from using the stuff...
I once thought I would be thoroughly perfect on a Z1 cam-cap and use a little Loctite on the 6mm bolts. I accidentally put just a little too much on one of the bolts and it ran along to the shim bucket and locked the bucket. What a job getting the bucket out!
Just the other day a mate, overhauling a Z1B head, found he could not undo his new tacho cable without crunching up the ferrel, as he had used Loctight.
These ferrels do have a habit of coming loose.

From what I can see, there are various strengths of Loctite for different applications, I think probably a medium duty one is what I will try either Loctite 241 or 242, 222 is a low strength with a breakaway torque of 8.5Nm.

I avoid the thread glues as much as possible and if i do use any thing i use arraldite twin pack epoxy glue and very sparingly, when it needs to be undone a hairdryer is used to soften it up, on the odd occasion Jimmock uses nail varnish but thats another story best saved for the back yard.

243 is a good strong semi-permanent, 222 is thin and light, will wick around thread, 638 is the good stuff, Herculaneum!
