I seem to have picked up a gremlin following my ride out on Sunday.

The problem is I have lost my brake lights and the idiot light on the console keeps flashing every 2 seconds when the ignition is turned on, both with and without the motor running.

Now I at first thought it was the front brake switch, as the problem dissapeared when I dissconnected the two wires, so I bought a new switch and fitted it today, but the problem is still there.

I have checked the stop lamp bulb and that seems fine.
I have dissconnected the front switch. same problem.
I have dissconnected the rear switch. same problem.

what else can I try?

I assume you refer to the brake failure lamp in the Tacho that's flashing?
This, from memory, senses the rear taillamp is functioning correctly or is in circuit, triggered by the rear brake pedal & front brake lever. If the taillamp lamp is comming on when the brakes are applied & your failure lamp is still flashing then is likely to be an earth problem. The sensing relay, bolted by coil 1&4, uses a common earth to compare voltage levels so verify its earth connection.

Thank you for the reply, I have now solved the problem....

I had a good look through the official workshop manual today, and it shows that the Z1000A2 has a brake failure circuit wired in to the brake system, and this flashes a light on the console to show you have a problem. and it works, as my problem turned out to be that age old favourite, a badly fitted crimp connector, that had been crimped on to the outer sheath and not the inner wire, so causing a bad contact, that had finaly failed. so the wire was stripped back and properly crimped, and we are back in service again, I will now check the other crimps in the back light area at the weekend.
