Piston Ring No.2

#1 PostAuthor: DogsbolloxofZ1B » Tue Aug 21, 2007 7:27 pm

This must of been discussed before but none of my searches have found it..

My querry is which way around does ring 2 go? All editions of the official workshop manual (1st Edition Nov '72 till rev 6 July 1991) show the second ring incorrectly, inside out & upside down!! See page 35

Has anyone else noticed this? I have two sets of identical rings, one OEM the other Japanese replacement, and both have the letter N stamped on them which means the relief sits closest to the internal diameter and uppermost. :?:

"N" faces the crown in my Z1000 book.

Dogs', Talking about that 2nd ring, I have noticed on the Z900's (ie. the 66mm bore and the two available oversizes), that the recess is on the outside and is to be facing the bottom.
The Z1000. however, have the recess on the inside and is to facing the crown.

As Rich says, the 'N' is facing upwards to the crown on the 1000. this is so for the 900 also.

In general with most 4 stroke engines the compression rings usually have a letter or mark of some sort which faces upwards(crown) when fitted to the piston

Thanks, the manual says keep the letter uppermost but the sectional drawing of ring2 is incorrect.

Dogs', this photo is a little hard to read. It's from "Clymer" manual.
You will notice one side says 900cc the other 1000cc.
Just to recap what we were talking about. Notice the illustration of the 2nd ring.
For 900cc - recess is on outside bottom.
For 1000cc - recess is on inside top.

Garn1,
Thanks, I have those same sketches and even though I have genuine NOS Z900 rings the 2nd ring is the same orientation as the Z1000 in your manual. I guess they must have changed for the Z900 too post publication of the genuine workshop manual.

I have a Z900 and the original ring placment in the 1973 Workshop manual does differ to the www.doreme.com 66mm Kawasaki copy pistons/rings. I was told by the Japanes chappis that no matter what rings you have nor what size the letter must face toward the top of the piston, even if the recess is oppposite to the original.
If in doubt contact the ring manufacturers direct. Hope this helps :))

Definately the letter N faces up, Clymer manual is incorrect, relief is same as the thou'.
I put 1 in after rebore upside down, it smoked like Phillip Morris lab Beagle and oil collected in inlet tract leading me to think all manner of ills in the head (see bike help - Oil,Oil,Oil) it was Garn that suggested my error-Thanks Mate. :D
