Kawasaki ZX9 Rear Disc

#1 PostAuthor: nigel bessant » Tue Feb 12, 2013 7:53 pm

Any ideas chaps where I can attempt to source a ZX9 rear disc with a difference?
Standard disc is 230mm O/D, 5 bolt fixing and no offset.
I need a 220mm 5 bolt with an 8mm offset.
Failing the offset I will have to machine 8mm off of the wheel's hub.
I could reduce the O/D of a new standard disc but it appears from pics that the drilled holes in the friction area are close to the edge of the disc.

Any thoughts?

Nigel,

I had a ZX7R rear disc reduced in diameter by 10mm (Bowden auto engineering, Bristol).
Is there room to move the existing carrier sideways by modifying the axle spacers?

HPS can get you discs made to your spec from ISR.

My project bike has ZX9R wheels with custom discs from ISR via HPS. This is a really good service as you specify exactly what you want. Having said that, the ZX9 rear disc is just a simple piece of flat steel whereas the offset discs usually have a separate dished carrier and are intended for the front wheel. I doubt there's enough space to have a 220mm OD disc and fit in a dished carrier, so you might be better off altering the wheel or the caliper carrier. If you alter the wheel you'll have to ensure that you still have enough metal for the bolt threads.
I ended up with a custom flat disc (I went bigger to 250mm OD) and then modified the caliper carrier so that it aligned with the disc.
Lastly, if you do order a custom ISR rear disc, watch out the for mounting holes as Kawasaki use some odd dimensions and the bolt holes have a recess so you can use the special mounting bolts. If you don't recess the bolts, then the bolt heads might hit the caliper carrier.
This part of the project was quite complex and took me a long time to get right. I ended up talking to HPS and the guy there was super helpful. I think his name was Giles.

Steve, trouble is, the ZX wheel fits like a glove using the standard spacers and the donor carrier in the swinger I'm using. I'm meeting with the machinist tomorrow and will see what he suggests.

LondonZ1, I think you are right regarding the disc diameter and the offset, a custom disc will cost more than the machining.

Cheers for your input.
