Guyz,
I took off my V&H sidewinder exhaust from my black zed today(sold to a club member)
Whilst I had the pipes off I started the bike up as it hadnt been started for a few weeks ( dont know why- just wanted to

)
When I looked into the exhaust ports, I noticed that there were quite a bit of fire coming out around the valves Is this normal ??
#1 & #4 were really "orange" around the valve & shooting flames out about 2", but #2 & 3 did not look to bad & no flames shooting out. I was going to take a video, but I didnt fancy getting my face burnt off !!
I am thinking it may be down to valve timing, but without adjustable sprockets
how can this be adjusted ?
Or could it be down to valve clearances.
The bike has standard cams fitted & wiesco pistons
Any pointers ??

I did the same thing...only in 1978...got blue flames out of all four...so something doesn't sound right.

I',ve seen an engine run with no pipes and that produced flames.....the bike was in perfect condition engine wise.

Flames are normal, obviously!
Can't be cam timing as it is the same on all cylinder regardless of having it adjustable or not.
Different flame colour is down to air/fuel ratio content.
Likely suspects are the carb settings being slightly off, carb manifold air leaks etc.
Probably worth setting up with a COLOURTUNE if you want matching flames.

I like the idea of "Matching Flames"
I was more concerned about the "ring" of fire I was seeing around the valve seat.

The ring of fire is normal but staring at your seat and observing it is not a healthy pastime and should not be done in public.
I suggest applying your excess energies to a wholesome hobby like jogging or rock climbing should increase your chances of blending in to normal society.
If you insist on persuing this activity may i suggest the mirror on a stick method similar to what the dentist uses to avoid future eye and back problems in later life.
