I want to do my own twin filler cap arrangement,similar to what you'd find on some classic endurance style bikes.
I can make the alloy piece without any complications,as Im lucky enough to have a BIG ( )milling machine. What im stuck with is the steel mounting plinth? What do you think would be the best way to make it??
Ive thought about buying (dont laugh to loud)a couple of steel pans,welding in side sections,and then chopping the top out as necessary. I have also thought about using some sheet steel,wrapping it around some suitably sized bar and welding,then adding a top section,dressing welds off etc etc.
Any ideas please?

For jobs like that I ALWAYS use "Magic Metal".

Easy to mould and sand into shape.

Might be worth talking to Harris or somebody like that

Thanks for suggestions. Ive heard some good comments about magic metal,from a mate who's used it on some powdercoated parts.
Harris would be an option if I had any money. Ive some sheets of steel,a TIG and a MIG set up. Id like to do it myself,I'll probably mess up and have to do it more than once,but thats half the fun.

youve got to make the alloy part first then the mounting part to match,i have one and it looks like there stamped out but can check for you, or just phone race fit for one

Original Shaw filler mounts are pressed steel. That twin filler is an alloy mount by the look of it, easy enough to make in a big lathe - you need the swing for the offset.

Milling machine - easy if you have a rotary table, a bit more set up if you don't.

Are you going to have screw in fillers, 1/4 turn or cammed?

Ive a large rotary table too,12incher I think? I know its heavy!
When i get a minute i'll try to fabricate something up. Ive been buying cnc'd alloy fuel caps from China,for about a tenner a piece,so will use two of them.
Once i have some prgress,i';; post some pics up.

The caps are lovely. I have some here. A mate bought some from a different supplier,again from China,for about 15 quid,and its a lovely piece of kit. The same youd pay 70-80 quid for from a bike shop (who've bought them from China...). The only thing i dont care for on mine are that on the suzuki fitment ones,they have an etched gsxr logo and likewise on the yam one I bought,which has a yzf logo. Its for my yzf,but i dont care for the logo.

I bought from these,without any problems,fairly quick delivery. I spent more at the chinese take away the other night,so they are as cheap as chip's (and fried rice and curry).

I'm liking the look of the endurance racing fillers. I have bought a spare tank (larger sized) for my Z1R which needs a refurb anyway, so I'll be watching with interest how your project progresses!

Even though ive not been anywhere near my workshop,ive been mentally working this out.
I shall make a start soon enough,with plenty of pics,even if (and when)things go wrong. lol. Im mates with a very well respected chop builder,who has people saying how great his stuff is,but he'll say to me,"look in the rubbish bin to see my cock ups.." I think mistakes are often a good way to learn.
