Do I need a sidelight for the MOT?

Are there any MOT experts out there who can help? I am thinking of fitting a headlight to my 1976 Z900 special that doesn't have a sidelight. The bike is a US import and I will need an MOT to get it registered for the first time. (I already have a dating latter.) Is a sidelight an MOT requirement? And would fitting daytime running lights count as an acceptable alternative to a side light?

Thanks

Should be ok aslong as you have high and low beam

you don't need a side light unless your switchgear has a sidelight position. As your bike is an import it is unlikely to have that shown on the switch block

Thanks guys

It will have modern switchgear off a CBR with no light switch, just high/low beam. The m-unit will turn the lights on when the engine starts. So that means no sidelight required, great.

my bike has no side lights, the main lights are wired to the ignition switch cause i wanted minimal switch gear, the idea of a unit that turns the lights on when the engine runs sounds interesting, any info on that would be helpfull

The only good thing Boyer Bransen make is the POWERBOX - and they do one that bypasses the lights until the bikes running

I am fitting a motogadget m-unit which controls all the electrical functions. It only turns the low beam light on after you have finished with the starter motor, i.e. when the engine is running. It's a tiny little box which replaces virtually all the relays and fuses. You just need an external starter relay, a fused supply straight from the battery and another relay if you want a headlamp flasher function. More info here:

There's no UK agent, I bought direct from Germany. Customer service is excellent.
