Heres one for you guyz, a mate of mine has just bought a very modified Z which is a none runner and is trying to id the engine and frame models so he can try and get an accurate wiring diagram.
Frame number is KZT00J-000715
Engine number is KHI 35468600
I havent seen the bike but the engine as described sounds like a Z1000J
Any ideas what year and model they were originally?

FRAME NUMBER RELATES TO A Z1000J1. ENGINE NUMBER DOES NOT EXIST NO 1000CC ENGINE NUMBERS BEGIN WITH KH1 OR KHI + YOU HAVE TOO MANY NUMBERS IT SHOULD ONLY HAVE 6. HAVE YOU A PHOTO OF THE ENGINE

Sounds like a replacement unit from the factory.

KHI is an abbreviation of Kawasaki heavy industries + i have never seen this prefix on any Kawasaki engine number. in reply to pigfords suggestion that the engine might be a factory replacement i would say it is highly unlikely + would either come ready stamped with the identical number or would have come through blank for the dealer to duplicate the old number on to the new engine. i remember when the z1300a1 came out with the small sump I replaced 3 motors supplied from the factory with the original numbers stamped on from the factory. i also replaced 2 2004 zx10r motors from the factory but these came through with no numbers on so it was up to the dealer to transfer / stamp the old engine number onto the new engine. it looks to me like you have a dodgy engine in your mates bike ???

I meant the casing - if not the complete engine

I may have misled you guys the engine number actually begins with KH1 not KHI as shown. Mate has promised photos of engine and engine number tomorrow. Watch this space, i'm as intrigued as everyone else.

OK guys, just got some pics to post and on first look it is a J motor aswell as the frame but looks like a decidedly dodgy engine number unless it is a dealers half arsed attempt at stamping the number on a blank replacement unit.
Your thoughts Gents.......
Looks like the original number has been ground off and another number stamped on ...very badly!

I'd agree with that.

This is how a J1 should be. Note no KH1 or I.

Chris - do you know what spare/replacement engine cases come marked with?
Could they have KHI on them - ready for a dealer to re-stamp them

Could it not be a re-stamped eng # from a stolen / recovered engine ???
As long as it corresponds with the V5 it should be ok..?
This is more of a question than a statement by the way, as my 79 A2 has the correct frame #... but a eng # Z1R******

same as V5. 1015cc barrell stamp, round-ended rocker cover etc. Previous owner wasnt sure of history either.

if it was an engine that had come from a salvage yard it should by law retain its original engine number + the owner should inform the dvla that the engine has been replaced

How about the Police models, weren't they numbered differently? The later LTDs had high engine nos too as I recall.
Either way the new number looks well-dodgy.

That number looks sorta genuine, except for the second numeral?
The "KHI" looks to be cast not stamped and with a raised border. Then the actual number appears to sit above the border again....
or is it just my old eyes?
