I’m about to refit the bottom race on my bottom yoke. When I removed the old one there was a thin washer placed between the seal 92056-003 and the race. It appears on the z900 parts book as 92022-231, but not on the Z1 parts book. Is this part recommended to fit?

Also, a special tool is recommended for fitting this race. Since I don’t have this, what do folks on here do/use?

Z2John, You're correct, there doesn't seem to be that washer in Z1 parts book.
Usually they have a shim washer that supports the rubber duplex washer.
However, many taper roller bearing sets replace this with a thicker rubber edged washer just to act as a dust cover.

Haven't found a tool to press them in! I usually use a large round section brass drift.
That's a nice tool for removal that AdrianH suggests.

One thing I've noticed.... Even though you think they are seated check them after a few bumpy rides. You will find they can be tensioned up a couple of turns on the head-stock.

Take your handy dandy dremmel and cut a 2-3mm slot out of the old outer race.

You can now use this to drift the outers into the steering head and, because it's slotted, it won't get stuck.

If you've not got a suitable tube but something a wee bit larger, you can use the same trick for the race on the bottom yoke by using the old race upside down or, I must admit, I've even used this method without a tube; just tapping down the inner onto the yoke using the slotted old'un in gentle steps. Yoke plakky bagged up in the freezer overnight and the bearing outer warmed will also make the job a whole lot easier.
