J2 oil pressure switch / oil pathways....

#1 PostAuthor: timyoungman » Sun Nov 11, 2012 10:23 pm

I took the oil pressure switch housing off my engine today. There are 2 oil pathways in the crakcase, one directly below the switch and a second nearer to the barrels. There is a rubber bung with a 10mm bolt in the second one.

I need to know why it's there. The engine has a oil cooler fitted. If I remove the oil cooler do I need to take out this bung to open up a new pathway for the oil ?? Can't see anything on the microfiche so if anyone knows please help...

Ta muchly. :confu

The forward hole you mention is the gallery that runs right along the back of the barrels in the crankcase. Its the feed for the top end. One end (right) is blanked with a plug and the other (left) is blanked with the alternator outer case.
Yes you need to remove the bung and bolt if removing the oil cooler. This set up must have had the return for the oil cooler fitted somewhere other than the oil pressure switch housing return which would have been the normal setup for GPZ's etc

Have a read on the last two pages of this thread it may seem familiar.

Thank you.

On this bike one oil cooler hoses is connected to the end of the gallery behind the barrels with an adapter replacing the (original) blank....The second hose is connected to another adapter directly into the oil pressure switch housing .ie the 2 original blanks that ( I guess) were standard have been removed and replaced with the adapters/hoses... Is this the same as the GPZ set up ? The cooler fitted is an 80's lockhart system btw...

PS. Do Z Power sell the blanks so I can take the cooler off or would I be better to just replace the rotten hoses and leave the cooler on ???

Tim my original post was more than a little miss-leading.
The transverse gallery rear of the barrels is the feed for the whole engine not just the top end.
The original pressure switch housing / oil distribution block (dual function) is a one piece affair.
The J only type is a simple internal loop to carry oil from the vertical shaft from the pump passed the pressure switch and into that gallery directly.
The GPZ item is blanked off internally (partitioned at that location) to provide an external feed to a cooler and a return path to the gallery at the same location.
Youre blanking grommet / bolt affair is simply designed to prevent direct flow into the gallery at this location and to re-route that flow through a cooler and back into the end of the gallery where the original would have had a hex headed blanking plug.

Some people fit a pressure gauge at this location (RHS above ignition housing) and have the return path from the cooler fitted elsewhere.

The choice of cooler or not is really down to the environment in which the bike is used and its state of tune, fuel type etc.

There is a flow diagram in the Kawasaki manual to make life easier its on page 3-26.

Z power definitely sell the Hex headed plug for the RHS of the gallery. The standard oil pressure switch housing i dont know about, however i may have one if youre in need.
Ebay will have standard ones and partitioned GPZ types come up from time to time.
FYI some of the latter dont have pressure switches in them. They are also blanked off so pressure function becomes a guessing game.

Hope this is a bit clearer.

Thanks again. Yes , much clearer now. I will get a couple of blanking plugs and remove the cooler for now.

Regards.

Tim.
