Can any1 recommend a decent mechanic (mobile preferred) in the Stafford area to give me a boost with my Z, i'm not much of mechanic so i'm a bit stumped, i think its fuel system but could easily be wrong, Timing maybe?

O.K. seing as theres no replies to that last post,...i'll try again.
i'm willing to spend the whole weekend trying everything in my power to get this bike going but if any1 has a check list i can work from i'd be most gr8full
the motor turns over and theres a strong spark at the plugs, the float chambers are full of fuel but she aint firing in,
must be a carb thing right?

Bomber, strong spark you say...
First check that there is petrol getting to the float chamber.
One carb at a time check that fuel comes out of the drain plug.
I had a small internal blockage once and checked the float bowl to find nil fuel! It may have been a stuck needle/ seat, now I think about it, not letting the fuel flow into the bowl.

Thanks for the reply but thats the point i'm stuck at....
yeh like i said, the fuel is to that point... all chambers full,
i had to remove one bowl and re-tap the thread cos some muppet had stripped it and glued the drain plug back in with stag paste...
Pilot jets blocked or Plug leads on the wrong plugs are the usual suspects if the rest of the motor is ok with good compression.
Lots of possible reasons for not running but those are the basic starting points without seeing the bike.
Try putting your hand over the carb mouths whilst spinning the engine as the vacuum created may force fuel through the jets and clear any blockage.
Are you getting any sort of response, backfiring etc or is it totally dead.

well i tried pouring a cap full o fuel in the barrels and yeh it backfired then but nothing without,
i'll go try the carb trick,
ow do i test for good compression?

the plug leads were already on so that might be it,
i dont have a manual yet so can you guide me to which one goes where
Double check that the ht leads are on the correct plugs.
If you have 1-4 on 2-3 and vise-versa the spark will be occuring at the bottom of the stroke and it wont run.
If all that checks out ok then it's the pilot jets.
Even if the compression is poor it should still run or at least make some noise and backfire etc if it's getting fuel.

no 1+4 coil is on the left side if you sit on the bike. the ht lead on the left of the coil goes to no 1 cylinder left side outer plug the other ht lead goes to no 4 cylinder outside plug on right side . the coil on the right side is for 2+3 cylinders the left ht lead from coil goes to no 2 plug on the left side of engine+ no 3 ht lead goes to no 3 cylinder on the right side of the engine. if the air box is still fitted try squirting some easy start into the air box as you are turning the engine over. also check the low tension leads to the coils are going to the right coils ? what z is it you have ?

all leads seem to be o.k.but not sure which LT leads hould go to which coil,
they are labelled from previously so.....
their is a spark at the plugs so i'm gonna try the carbs next, i'll take the K+Ns off and try a blowback to try and clear the jets?
