missfire/voltage at coils

#1 PostAuthor: bigalhudson » Sun Sep 09, 2012 11:22 am

Tried to start the bike yesterday and only firing on No's 2&3 so had a look at the coils this morning. Ive got a new Dyna S ignition and coils fitted and its been running fine up to today. I could't trace the problem but was only getting 8.5 volts at the coils. Managed to fire it up and now only running on 1,3 and 4?. Then it cut out completely with no response to the starter button at all. Traced this problem to the kill switch which I've had problems with before. Stripped and cleaned the kill switch and and its now firing on all 4 but lumpy as hell and I'm still only getting 9.5v at the coils.
So: should I expect to get a full 12v at the coils? and if this is a problem what's the lightly cause. Wiring loom looks OK and I will chase through with a voltmeter to see if there is an obvious drop off somewhere

Any thought much appreciated

A good 12v + is a MUST at the coils....... I'd go s relay set up direct to ensure a good feed as the Kill Switch can often cause problems :??
And on the 7th day... Zeds were created!

have you checked the battery voltage/ charging system ? if that's all OK as pigford said try connecting a wire direct from the battery to the + side of the coils

if you look at wired georges website it gives a good explanation of how to do the relay mod to get a guaranteed 12v to the coils.

Yep that all makes sense, backfiring and sooty plugs as well. The bike had the relay mod on it originally but when I fitted the Dyna S I removed it as I didnt know what it was.
Thanks all

I just did the relay mod.

Despite new loom, new switchgear and new coils I only got 11volts at the coils.
Now get 12.6 at rest and 13.5 running.

Evenin' Chaps,
I've read a few of the posts ref the "WiredGeorge" Coil Mod, and as I'm only getting 9.8 and 10.2v at the coils, want to have a go.
Now lectrix is a bit scary to me.
Did anyone take any "Guide for Dummies" pix as they did the mod?
Read the info on the Wired George website but pix would make more sense to me.
All help greatly appreciated.
Cheers,
Bongo.
