sorry for more basic questions but just trying to not make too many silly mistakes

Firstly, im going to overhaul the brakes alittle, ive done fluids and pads before but really need to replace the rubber all round, the one im unsure of is the boot around the piston, how is that held on and does that mean coming into contact with fluid and getting air into the system?(do they have to come apart) i was going to use the method of drawing new fluid through behind the old to stop air getting in

second question is about the chain, im going to replace chain and sprockets, but because my bike has a jmc braced arm, will the standard chain be the correct length?

Best thing with the chain is to count the links and order the same number.

When you ask about the brakes which rubber are you talking about?

Take the pistons out and clean out all the sediment, water and smolge from behind the pistons. You need them out to replace the inner seal anyway.

Replace the chain and sprockets with 530 ones.
Smaller, lighter, less power absorption, quieter, better gear changes, cheaper and more redily available.

Its very easy to convert 630 chain to 530 chain numbers.
Post up what size sprockets and number of links of the chain and someone will convert it for you.

630 chain is 3/4 or 6/8 pitch looking at it another way
530 chain is 5/8 pitch.

For example
15 tooth becomes 18 tooth when changing to 530
and 42 tooth rear becomes 50 tooth with the smaller chain.
98 tooth chain in 630 becomes 118 in 530.

the gator? around the pistons, i think ive seen sets on ebay with those rubbers and the two guide rubbers in a kit

ah ok thanks, again, wouldnt have known to even question that, so how do i know if its 530? looked on wemoto and theres no specs?

Looking at the pictures of youre bike i cant tell what the chain size is. However it looks like a standard rear sprocket so 630 i'd guess.
Easy enough to tell, just a rough count of the teeth and there it is. Around 98 to 102 its 630. 112 to 114 ish and its going to be 530 probably.
If you want to stick with 630 save youre money i have several rear 630 sprockets you could have foc. I have a decent front too i believe though none are new.
You can get chain and sprockets from several sources and in several grades for the chain.
Debbens, M&P, Busters, Talon, Wemoto, etc etc etc.

If you want custom size sprockets i would suggest Talon and they do keep some on the shelf. I bought a rear non standard from them a month ago and it was in stock.
They also do off-set fronts if thats the way you want to go.

Rear tyre size from another thread in discussion should be 120 section but i have a 130 on a gpz rear rim like yours and its fine. No need to alter sprocket off-set with this size of tyre but a 140 (not advisable) will be very close indeed if not touching with a 630 chain.

That rubber boot around the piston attaches on a thin edge of a small rim that is a light press- fit into the caliper.

yeah this ones a 630, you can see its a heavier duty one, i like the idea of going to the 530 now i realise they aint any weaker, i thought a chain/sprocket set was around £100, been a while since i got one lol.

Ive not took the back end off yet, just finished the front and waiting for some more cash before i strip the back end, that way i'll do tyre and chain and sprockets together

The 140 is definitely gonna be downsized, i was thinking 130, but they only come in 70 profile on the perellis so thinking about taking it back to the 120 with the 90 profile like the front and maybe in the future change the rims and front end for something more modern(though im kind of swaying to the classic looks of her). The 140's not too close to the tyre, though the linkafe arm the other side is a different matter, must be about 4mm from touching

ah ok so i can replace that one without stripping the piston down?

still cant figure out how the gator(outer dust one) comes off these pistons, seems to disappear down the side of the piston somehwere?

problem sorted, i know what Garn was trying to say now, its one of those things, you dont know until you take them apart lol, the front dust seals were stuck in, and there was some creme powdery stuff around them. they were just stuck, took them out, cleaned up the pistons, no corrosion, no leaks coming through, wooden tooth pic in to clean out the seating for the new ones and all looking shiney and almost new looking(on the inside)

just got to get the new ones ordered and another job done
