Hi Guys, I'm new to the site, so hello all.
Have recently picked up a Z1000A1 (will post pics when worked out how to)
The bikes in reasonable condition, requiring a little TLC, including paint job, bit of re chroming etc all the usual stuff.Engine sounded pretty smooth although has a couple of leaks mainly from the rocker cover and the cam chain adjuster. Nothing that can't be put right fairly easily..........................However! On getting the bike home, I discovered that some cock has done a piss poor job of helicoiling a fucked plug thread. The owner forgot to mention this.The worry is now, the helicoil has gone and the plug fits in the hole like a dick in a shirt sleeve, can it be repaired in a better more permanent way than a helicoil. Any one have any ideas? The other slight problem is that, between seeing the bike and picking it up (about 6 weeks) someone has knocked and broken off a piece of the top fin ( the front corner).I didn't notice on collection so don't have the piece. Can this be repaired at all?
I can do most of the basic mechanics but have no engineering/machineing skills or experience.

if the helicoil is done right its fine it can also be done in bike as for fins they can be welded up

helicoils are normally fine, problems happen if you take the plugs out / in with a hot cyl head.
for your fin ,i have used an alloy metal in a paste and in the past have repaired fins, cases and a crankcase. you can even drill/ tap it. so file it down to match when dry, its available on the internet/ i think even halfords do a version though i havent tried theirs.

No issues at all with these, but you do need the head off to fit these,some say you can do it with the head on using grease to catch any swarf - But I would advise against this as there is no guarantee to catch every little bit.

Clean out newly cut thread with thinners and put some thread lock on outer thread of insert before fitting ( stops it coming out )

went to club meet last weekend

Now got a new job so life is busy at moment -

still in motorcycle trade - hopefully will be able to sort some benefits out for club members

can't promise anything yet but will do what I can

I helicoil but with one of these taps that dont req drilling it uses the plug thread as a guide and cuts a new thread for the helicoil,as a bonus just repaired a sump thread with it works fine,,
