Handlebar replacement - routing of cables

Mornin' Chaps,

Some advice needed please.

I want to replace the high bars on my Z1000 with a lower more "Street" type.
Unlike my Z650, which has the cables coming out of the side of the control casings, the Z1000 routes the cables inside the handlebar itself.
After chatting to a mate, he said that it would be unwise to drill an alloy bar of pairs (Renthal) as it would weaken them, and advised that steel bars would be the way to go.
Has anyone done this? Would it be safe?

Alternatively I suppose I could replace the controls with Z650 type and run the cables externally.
If I did this, would there be any mither with the wiring?
I'd just not have the hazard switch I suppose.

Your thoughts would be gratefully received.

Bongo.

Or fit lower bars with internal wiring.

Which I have a spare NOS set of.

I wouldn't trust a pair of ally bars , I know that the thicker wall of Renthals gives them strength but i'm a bit nervous with my own steel holey handlebars

I do know that KeithZ1R has done this on one of his bikes with steel bars.

Bongoball, I would ignore the drilled bars and have external cables with a couple of plastic pull-type fixes (can't think of their name!). I'm pretty sure the Z1000A1 gave up on those cables down the handle bars with the A2. Hence, the controls would still be available with the hazard.
Or you could forget all about those useless hazards! and Go with your 650 controls.
