Regulator v Regulator / Rectifier

Can anyone advise on changing from a Regulator to a Regulator / Rectifier.
Following a problem starting the bike, i charged the battery up and found the charging voltage went from 13.7 to over 17 volts at about 4,000 rpm - Regulator problem.
Z Power advised the regulator is no longer available, and i now have a nice shiny Regulator / Rectifier with the same Green Plug, a black earth and a white wire, which i think should be connected to the white wire that was connected to the standard Rectifier unit ???
Question is, what do i do with the White plug, now that its function has been replaced with a combined unit? Is it OK to just remove the old rectifier and leave the white plug blank?
Any advice would be appreciated.
