voltage at coils

hi all, was wondering if anyone can help with a bit of info.
out of intrest, i thought i would see how much voltage i was geting to the coils, as i had been on wiredgeorges site, and read about his relay mod, but what i cant determine is this, do you leave the coil terminals connected to the coils to check voltage or not ?
if i disconnect the coils, i get a good 12 volts to the power supply wire,
if i leave them connected i get 9 volts what is the correct method for an accurate reading?
P.S i have new dyna coils and leads, & new dyna s ignition, new wiring harness fitted, new fuse box fitted, all terminals are clean and have used dow corning electrical grase on assembly of all block connectors, and individual bullet connectors, battery reads 12.9 out of bike, battery to starter relay lead also new. thanks in advance for any info tricky.
