Just a quick question, when old bolts are re plated are they done in bright zinc or nickel?

I would say normally bright zinc, but Mikey will do 'em with a yellow passivate or olive drab, pretty much anything you want.

I use a small zinking kit, and i put them (rusty bolts/pieces) in patieo cleaner, then rinse, copper wire, into the zinking kit, for 15/20 mins, comes out, gray, rince off, wipe off, then polish on a small 8" grinder wheel, with a polishing mops. Then into the orange passivate! job done.
Polishes up like chrome. I use this for only small parts. but a saving is a saving, and not wait for a few weeks, to get it back. I can take it off, the bike, in the morning, and put it back on the bike before lunch!!!

There are a few bolts that need re-plating that were originally chrome. The items I'm referring to are those little 6mm bolts that have the number "7" embossed on them.

Does anyone know how these are handled, regarding re-chrome plating?
My thoughts are..
De chrome.
Fine bead blast.
Copper, nickel then re-chrome.
lightly polish.

Another query is, the early Z1 head nuts are not usually heavily (brightly) chrome plated, they usually still have the machine marks still present and have a nickel plated look!
Anyone care to comment on this renovation process?

Always use copperslip or similar between stainless and aluminium as the aluminium will react when it comes into contact with stainless and corrode them together.
