if you rotate crankshaft clockwise until cam lobe depresses inlet valve fully, fit shim tool, then rotate cranshaft anticlockwise till bucket is held down by the tool and eventually cam lobe pointing upwards......the lobe doesn't go anywhere near the tool..............I've just done all mine this aft!

the only way the piston can hit the valve whether turning the crankshaft clockwise or anti clockwise is if the valve timing is out of sinc have you removed the advancer + made sure the locating peg has not sheared on the crank .also put a screwdriver into no 4 cylinder + turn the crank until the screwdriver is at the top + see if the advancer tdc mark is aligned with the mark on the cover

it only hits the valve a when tool is in place.while its in place i rotate the cam away from tool so as to remove shim.but before cam lobe is out the way piston hits valve.

YES: The cam should be holding the valve open - then insert tool - then rotate cam so the lobe moves into centre of engine - towards spark plug/away from tool. Only turn motor over enuff to slide shim out.

My Mk.II has lumpy cams and you have to remove the cams to change the shims - and YES, they are over bucket-shims, NOT under-bucket :!:
