i am going to chase the thread with a grease covered tap to try to improve things. Question is, Can i fit a thread insert without taking the head off and all the filings getting into the cylinder ?

Just made the plug really 'loose'.
My suggestion would be to live with it, or have the head off & have the job done properly.
When I was at school, I chased a few girls.
But never a spark plug thread??

Do it right & whip the head off.
I used these http://www.timesert.com/AFTER I tried the grease way.
I will try & post a pic of my valve once it chewed up a small fragment that the grease did not catch. (Not a pretty sight)

Andy - I have a spark plug thread chaser tool very similar to that mate. ( same thing but a different make)
I have never used it cos I've not had cause to but if you wanted to try it instead of buying one you are welcome to borrow it.
I am pretty sure I also have some spark plug helicoils too if you need them
I am just off junction 36 if that is of use to ya ?.
