Coil connections help

Having just rebuilt a z900 I finally got it running last night. It turns out that I'd plugged the coils into the wrong wires from the points. The books are telling me that the points on the left hand side feed cylinders 1&4 and the right side 2&3. Mine is the opposite of this, as in left side 2&3. The bike seems to run ok but I can't believe the manuals would mention it if it didn't matter. I,m worried I might be in danger of causing some serious damage and bearing in mind I've just had the engine top end rebuilt and the frame straightened I'd probably just drown myself in a vat of beer if I get it wrong now. Come to think of it I might do that anyway. Anyone able to offer any advice?

The worst that will happen if you switch the coils round is that you'll get a spark on each cylinders exhaust stroke, rather than it's compression stroke. The bike just won't run, but it wouldn't do any serious damage.

Have you had the adv/ret cam off to grease and put it back the wrong way?

The engine top end has been rebuilt by Mark Hutton. Don't think he touched the backing plate though. I'll leave as is. Thanks for the advice chaps, excellent as usual.

As already said - irrelevant which way around they go - as long as it runs
